The Royal London Homeopathic Hospital

The Royal London Homeopathic Hospital The Royal London Homeopathic Hospital (now called the Royal London Hospital for Integrated Medicine (RLHIM)) established at 32 Golden Square on 10.10.1849, was founded by the British Homeopathic Association and the British Homeopathic Society under Frederick Hervey Foster Quin (and many others) and officially opened on 10.4.1850, the anniversary of Samuel Hahnemann‘s birthday, initially with fifty in patient beds. The London Homeopathic hospital was built solely from contributions from homeopaths and the homeopathic community and at no point were any public monies used in its construction, and the building was given to the NHS in 1948. The recent refurbishment of the hospital was paid for by a completely different part of the NHS budget than that used for clinical care, and as the Hospital building in Great Ormond Street houses three hospitals, the homeopathic hospital benefited from the renovation project. With thanks to Peter Morrell and the Illustrated London News April 1858: The supporters of homeopathy are now striving to establish a large metropolitan hospital, which shall be conducted according to the principles inculcated by Hahnemann, which will be a school for homeopathic students, and which will afford to allopathic physicians the means of inquiring into the merits of the new doctrine and practice. A public dinner in aid of the building fund of this charity took place on Wednesday, April 21 at Willis’s Rooms, when the Duke of Beaufort, George Ponsonby O’Callaghan 2nd Viscount Lismore, Arthur de Vere Capell Viscount Malden, Henry Robinson Montagu 6th Baron Rokeby, Lord Grey de Wilton, Lord Cosmo Russell, Robert Grosvenor, Mr Truman MP, Major Blake, Edmund Gardiner Fishbourne, *H D Pritchard, Mr Sheriff Rutherford, Frederick Hervey Foster Quin, John Rutherford Russell, and about 150 other gentlemen, known as supporters and practitioners of homeopathy in the metropolis and in the provinces. The usual toasts were given, viz– “The Queen;” “The Prince Consort and the Royal Family;” and “The Army and Navy,” responded to by Henry Robinson Montagu 6th Baron Rokeby and Edmund Gardiner Fishbourne, who alluded to their experience of the benefits personally derived by them from homeopathy during their service in the Niger expedition and in the Crimea. The Chairman then proposed “Success to the London Homeopathic Hospital,” which was enthusiastically received. From the statement of the chairman it appeared that the institution was opened in 1850, at a house rented for that purpose in Golden Square, and had been removed, last October, to freehold premises in Great Ormond Street, WC, purchased for £5,000. During its existence the hospital had, at an average expenditure of £1,000 a year, afforded relief to 23,000 sick persons, of whom nearly 1200 were in-patients. The returns of treatment were stated to prove the advantages of homeopathy. Thus, while, according to the Registrar General, the rate of mortality in the allopathic metropolitan hospitals is 7.5 per cent, the deaths in the Homeopathic Hospital, including those from cholera, have not exceeded 4.6 per cent. The premises recently purchased in Great Ormond Street are estimated to provide accommodation for almost 200 in-patients, and, when the necessary alterations are completed, there will be two accident wards, a ward for children, a theatre for a school of medicine, &c. The estimated cost of these alterations, and of fittings and furniture, is £4,000, and contributions have been received which reduce the amount to £2,500. The total receipts since the opening of the hospital have amounted to £15,000; and the management had thus far not only defrayed current expenses, but had been enabled to purchase the new premises, besides investing £800 towards the formation of an endowment fund. The chairman’s appeal was liberally responded to by the company, and contributions were announced amounting to £1,000—including 20 guineas from the chairman, 15 guineas from the Duke of Beaufort, £100 from Thomas Egerton 2nd Earl of Wilton, and £100 from Captain Felix V Smith. “The Memory of Hahnemann, the founder of homeopathy,” was proposed by John Rutherford Russell; “The health of the Duchess of Cambridge, the patroness of the hospital,” by the Duke of Beaumont; “The health of the Chairman,” by Frederick Hervey Foster Quin; “The Honorary Secretary, Ralph Buchan,” by the Duke of Beaufort. Several other toasts were given, and Arthur Wellesley 1st Duke of Wellington, on leaving the chair, was loudly cheered. The musical arrangements were under the direction of Mr G Buckland, who was assisted by Messrs Lockey, Young and H Buckland. It may be added that there are homeopathic hospitals in Paris, Vienna, Berlin, Moscow, and St Petersburg. In 1851, Thomas Mackern was a Surgeon at the Hospital, In 1851, Charles Trueman was Office Manager at the hospital. In 1854, the London Homeopathic Hospital was turned over entirely to cholera victims. In the Cholera epidemic of 1854, 54,000 people died, the death rate under allopathic methods was 59.2% and only 16.4% under homeopathic treatment. In 1855 a report on the treatment of cholera patients at the London Homeopathic Hospital was made to Parliament. The London Homeopathic Hospital report for that year reveals 3636 patients were treated, making a total of 18,002 patients treated since it opened in 1850. Many homeopaths and supporters of homeopathy were involved in the London Homeopathic Hospital at this time, including Hugh Cameron, Francis Richard Charteris 10th Earl of Wemyss Lord Elcho, Captain Chapman, John Chapman, Edward Charles Chepmell, Jacob Dixon, George Napoleon Epps, John Epps, Washington Epps, Edward Hamilton, George Calvert Holland, Joseph Kidd, George Lade, Thomas Robinson Leadam, Charles Powell Leslie, Victor Massol, J Bell Metcalfe, Augustus Henry Moreton, Henry William Paget, Samuel Thomas Partridge, Alfred Crosby Pope, Henry Reynolds, Henry O Robinson, Marmaduke Blake Sampson, Thomas Uwins, David Wilson, Stephen Yeldham, and large numbers of the Aristocracy. In 1858 a Festival in aid of the London Homeopathic Hospital was held with many Aristocratic and minor gentry patrons attending, alongside Dr. Ayerst, William Bayes, Hugh Cameron, Edward Charles Chepmell, William Vallancy Drury, George Napoleon Epps, Arthur Guinness, Edward Hamilton, Frantz Hartmann, Amos Henriques, Joseph Kidd, Thomas Robinson Leadam, J Bell Metcalfe, Frederick Hervey Foster Quin, Henry Reynolds, John Rutherford Russell, Charles Caulfield Tuckey, George Wyld, Stephen Yeldham, and many others. In 1859, the hospital outgrew its building, so Frederick Hervey Foster Quin purchased three houses in Great Ormond Street, one of which had been the headquarters of the antislavery campaign, and these were converted at a cost of £15,000. This hospital building was in use for thirty six years and saw 250,000 patients. The staff of this new hospital included Francis Henry Bodman, David Dyce Brown, George Henry Burford, H A Clifton Harris, John Moorhead Byres Moir, James Compton Burnett, John Henry Clarke, Arthur Crowden Clifton, Robert Thomas Cooper, William Vallancy Drury, Robert Ellis Dudgeon, Washington Epps, Robert Douglas Hale, Richard Hughes, Edwin Awdas Neatby, and Charles Edwin Wheeler and many others. In 1860s, Allan Campbell was a Resident Medical Officer at the London Homeopathic Hospital, who subsequently emigrated to Adelaide in Australia in 1860s. In 1861, the London Homeopathic Hospital had 200 beds and 27.086 patients had been seen since its inception. In 1866, William Warren Vernon was on the House Committee of the hospital. In 1868, Jacob Dixon was an Assistant Medical officer at the Hospital, Vernon Bell was a member of the Medical Council of the hospital, In 1868, William Budd was a Collector at the Hospital, Rev. John Rogers 1805? – 1868? MA Oxford and London 1833, was the Chaplain of the London Homeopathic Hospital in 1868, Rev. John Rogers wrote The Psalms in Hebrew in 1834, In 1878, Hugh Lupus Grosvenor 1st Duke of Westminster became Vice President of the hospital, About 1880 John Henry Clarke was a consultant at the London Homeopathic Hospital, alongside George Mann Carfrae, Arthur Crowden Clifton, Edith Neild, Thomas Eadie Purdom, Charles Thomas Knox Shaw, John Rutherford Russell and David MacNish. Charles Lloyd Tuckey was Assistant Physician to the London Homeopathic Hospital at this time. Gerard Smith was Orthopaedic Surgeon at the hospital at this time, In 1883, Apollinaris Victor Jagielski was appointed as a Governor, In 1890, William Vaughan Morgan proposed major improvements to the hospital, William Vaughan Morgan Treasurer 1875-1889. Chairman of the Board of Management 1888 to his death in 1892 (See the website of Homeopathe International by Peter Morrell and Sylvain Cazalet). William Vaughan Morgan suggested at the 39th Annual General Meeting the desirability of pulling down the old Great Ormond Street Hospital and building the present modern Hospital, and contributed £ 3,000 to the Building Fund. This increase, without exaggeration by leaps and bounds, naturally entailed a corresponding increase in the cost of maintenance. The expenditure for the first year in Golden Square was £600; while that for the years 1855-59 was nearly £500 per mouth, or about £6,000 per annum. (The expenditure for last year, 1913, in the present enlarged hospital of 163 beds, was £13,359). The building, as it was then, had been adapted from three very old houses, and was, after all that had been done for it in the way of reconstruction and sanitation, very antiquated, as compared with the more modern hospital buildings of that time. Large sums had been spent upon it, a constant outlay for repairs being necessary to maintain it in working order. In the year 1890 the Board, under the chairman ship of William Vaughan Morgan, decided that a special effort should be made to provide a building more suitable for the work of the Hospital and worthy of the science of Homeopathy. Accordingly some of the best friends of the hospital were approached. A generous lady, Miss J. Durning Smith, who had for many years munificently supported the Hospital, signified her intention to contribute the sum of £10,000 under the pseudonym of “A Friend well known to the Hospital.” William Vaughan Morgan himself contributed £3,000. A nobleman, who desired to be anonymous, promised £2,000, James Epps gave £2,000, Miss Barton and Miss Isabella Barton £1,000 each and Colonel James Clifton Brown, £1,000. In 1893, Mary Adelaide of Cambridge Duchess of Teck laid the foundation stone for the new extension at the London Homeopathic Hospital, designed by architect William Alfred Pite, and in 1895, she opened the new extension of 100 beds at the London Homeopathic Hospital. In 1894 – *James Edward Liddiard was a Physician at the Hospital, In 1901 – *Wilfred St. George Grantham Hill was a an Anaesthetist and Resident Physician at the hospital, In 1903 – Octavia Margaret Sophia Lewin read a paper by James Tyler Kent from America, bringing about a revolution in homeopathy which influenced Octavia Margaret Sophia Lewin‘s successors, Marjorie Blackie and Margaret Lucy Tyler. In 1904, James Searson was a Physician at the Hospital, In 1908, Enriqueta Augustina Rylands left £5000 to the hospital in her will, In 1908, Robert Henryson Caird was prominent on the Board of Management of the London Homeopathic Hospital in Great Ormond Street since 1904. Robert Henryson Caird became Chairman of the hospital’s House Committee from 1908, and supervised the building of the new wing and nurses’ home in the years that followed. Henry Shackleton was also a physician at the hospital at this time (his son Ernest Henry Shackleton‘s Antarctic expedition of 1914 to 1916 on the Endurance, and Ernest Henry Shackleton’s open boat the James Caird, was funded by James Key Caird 1st Baronet). Henry Whatley Tyler was interested in homeopathy and contributed large sums of money for the expansion of the London Homeopathic Hospital. His daughter Margaret Lucy Tyler was a student of James Tyler Kent and became one of the most influential homeopaths of all time. “When her father, the late Henry Whatley Tyler, gave the Tyler Wing to the London Homeopathic Hospital, he told her “I have done my part: now you must do yours.” [Margaret Lucy Tyler: An Appreciation John Weir, in Homeopathy 1943] The Chariman of the House Committee of the London Homeopathic Hospital since 1908, and a Member of the Board of Management since 1904. Chairman of the Building Committee for the building of the Sir Henry Tyler Wing and the New Nurses Home, 1908-1911. When the new London Homeopathic Hospital was designed and rebuilt in 1895 it was arranged that a further wing facing west to Queen Square could be added at any time when it might be required. In 1908 it was found that the building was totally inadequate to the demands made upon it, and, indeed, for two or tree years the usefulness of its work had been greatly hampered by the lack of space. The extension of the London Homeopathic Hospital building on the adjoining freehold ground, including the Queen’s Head public house, which by this date had been purchased for the purpose, was now very forcibly impressed upon the Board of Management. That there was now very forcibly impressed upon the Board of Management. That there was an urgent need for enlargement was only too apparent when serious cases frequently had to be refused admission because there was no room to receive them. In one small section only of the In patients, nine women each waited over three months, and eight others waited over six months for admission. The present London Homeopathic Hospital Building has now been in use for sixteen years, 1895 – 1911, and during the last eight years in the old building in Great Ormond Street the In-patients totaled: 1887 to 1895 ….. 5,680 In the next two periods of eight years in the present building the In patient had increased to: 1895 to 1902 ….. 8,150 In patients 1903 to 1911 ….. 8,699. After much consideration the Board decided to enlarge the London Homeopathic Hospital, and with a view to starting an extension fund to build a new West Wing to the existing London Homeopathic Hospital, Henry Whatley Tyler, as already mentioned, contributed £10,000, the late Mrs. Rylands £5,000 (Enriqueta Augustina Rylands), Lord Dysart £2,000, the late Captain Cundy, Vice Chairman of the board, £1,000, C.M. £1,000, and with the assistance of many other warm friends and supporters of the London Homeopathic Hospital, the sum of £47,000 was soon raised for the purpose. The President of the British Homeopathic Society Harold Wynne Thomas, the President of the previous British Homeopathic Congress James Johnstone, together with the Vice President of the International Homeopathic Council George Henry Burford, met by arrangement the Chairman of the London Homeopathic Hospital, Robert Henryson Caird to consider the necessary preliminaries. Their consultation issued in the nomination of a Provisional Committee constituted by representatives of the principal homeopathic activities in Great Britain, and the publication of a statement of the case, with an appeal for funds to those favourably inclined to the work. Thus did the leaders of British Homeopathy lead, and the response of the English speaking homeopaths the world over was immediate and maintained. Fortified by this support, the Provisional Committee nominated two Commissioners Ethelbert Petrie Hoyle and David MacNish to proceed to France to confer with the military authorities there, as well as with the principal homeopathic physicians in Paris. As the issue of this investigation, the Committee decided to work under the auspices of the French Red Cross Society, and to internationalism as far as possible, the interest it was desirable to arouse of homeopathic supporters in this special procedure. In 1909, Hugh Frederick Vaughan Campbell 4th Earl Cawdor was President, Treasurer and Chairman of the London Homeopathic Hospital. In 1909, Ms. Hoadley Lady Superintendant of the London Homeopathic Hospital was added to the Territorial Force Nursing Service, In 1911, further extensions and additions were made to the London Homeopathic Hospital, including a nurses’ home. Queen Mary led the fundraising for this project, and the current Patron, George Wyatt Truscott laid the Foundation stone of the Henry Tyler Wing at this time. Maryanne (“Minna”) Brew, who was a Matron at the London Homeopathic Hospital for many years died in 1913. In the 1900s to the 1930s, Eugene Cronin, John Roberson Day, Gilbert Hare, Geoffrey Hahnemann Hayle, Ethelbert Petrie Hoyle, William Percy Purdom, George Scriven, Thomas George Stonham, were Consultants at the hospital at this time. The Hospital also benefited from lectures by external professionals including Allan Broman, In the 1930s, Edwin Awdas Neatby founded The Missionary School of Medicine at the London Homeopathic Hospital: The Missionary School of Medicine at the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital teaching staff included doctors experienced in tropical medicine and other specialities. The Annual Reports list the teaching staff, many of whom are recognised for their contributions to the development of homeopathy. Donald MacDonald Foubister lectured on Children’s Diseases, as did Kathleen Priestman (who was President of the MSM between 1981 and 1991); Alva Benjamin taught on skin diseases, Charles Edwin Wheeler, John MacKillop and Muriel Francis Adams on general medicine; William Eldon Tucker and Philip Norman Cutner on surgery and H Dodd, who was the vascular surgeon and later became President of MSM in 1952. N E Gillham taught dentistry and J N LeRossignol chiropody. Three doctors on the teaching staff were later appointed Royal physicians: John Weir, Marjorie Grace Blackie and Ronald W Davey. Llewelyn Ralph Twentyman remains the doyen of them all, surviving to tell the tale of the lectures often given in the Hospital Board Room, which were much enjoyed by everyone. In World War II, the London Homeopathic Hospital suffered extensive bomb damage, the hospital staff won four George Medals during this time. Also during this time, homeopathic refugees Otto Leeser and Erich Kurt Ledermann fled Europe to join the staff at the London Homeopathic Hospital. In 1943, Agnes Moncrieff, c.1902 – 1948, born Scotland, MB ChB Glas 1926, FFHom 1943, lived Hendon, London, Honorary Physician Diseases of Children, London Homeopathic Hospital, In 1945, John MacKillop converted to homeopath and began a course of study in the bombed out buildings. Despite the state of its infrastructure, the London Homeopathic Hospital admitted and treated many hundreds of patients. In 1948, the rebuilt and extensively expanded London Homeopathic Hospital became the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital, when George VI conferred it with title. At this time, many famous homeopaths worked at the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital, including Edward Bach, Ardeshir Kavasji Boman Behram, Douglas Morris Borland, John Henry Clarke, Andrew Tocher Cunningham, Donald MacDonald Foubister, Clarence Granville Hey, James Douglas Kenyon, Thomas Maughan, William Burnett Douglas Miller, Elizabeth Paterson, John Paterson, Kathleen Gordon Priestman, Percival George Quinton, William Wilson Rorke, William Lees Templeton, Margaret Lucy Tyler, John Weir, Charles Edwin Wheeler, Harold Fergie Woods, *Charles Yarrow Eccles, and Dudley d’Auvergne Wright. Charles Baudemprez, Marc Cassette, Fournon, Pol Henry, Edouard Schepens, were teaching at the hospital at this time. 1958 – the homeopathic hospitals are the main (?only) recruiting and entry point for British Medical graduates at this time... Many famous people became Trustees of the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital at this time, including John Bertram Leslie Ainsworth, *Kenneth Biddis, Marjorie Blackie, Douglas Morris Borland, Adrian Cedric Boult, Carl Davies, Dudley Wooton Everitt, Donald MacDonald Foubister, George MacLeod, Douglas Medlicott Gibson, Yehudi Menuhin, John Weir, G R Rogers ACCS was the Treasurer of the London Homeopathic Hospital in 1964, In 1960, Sir Colville Herbert Sanford Barclay 14th Baronet 1913 – 2010 (a British naval officer, painter and botanist whose career spanned amphibious landings and commando operations off the coast of France during the Second World War, having his paintings exhibited at the Royal Academy, publishing reference works about the flora of Crete and taking commissions to obtain plant samples from across the world for the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew) became an advocate of homeopathic medicine and spent forty years on the board of the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital. In 1968, the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital initiated one of the earliest cook-chill catering units in Britain. There were many benefactors of the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital at this time, including Sergei William Kadleigh, 1972 – P J Myers leaves the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital to take up a post at King’s College Hospital as Administrative Assistant (Personnel), See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_European_Airways_Flight_548 On 18.6.1972, the Trident Airliner carrying 16 staff of the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital, including Isabel Campbell, Marjorie Golomb, (Sisters) Kawther Theresa Kandalla and Ludi Maylone Kandalla, Sergei William Kadleigh, Joan Mackover, John Robertson Raeside, Mary Stevenson, and Elizabeth Somerville Stewart and her husband Thomas Fergus Stewart from the Glasgow Homeopathic Hospital), and Elizabeth Sharp Hawthorn 1918-1972, crashed at Staines near Heathrow on its way to the International Homeopathic League in Brussells, and as a result of this devastating blow, the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital lost its independance, suffered the closure of the operating theatre, the surgical, childrens and geriatric wards, and the number of in patient beds fell to 25. 1970s – *Kenneth Biddis, was a Trustee of the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital, Nevertheless, the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital saw new innovation during the 1990s with the pioneering work of Ralph Twentyman, Anthony Campbell, Michael Jenkins and Jesse Dickson Mabon. 2000 - Nurse education at the London Homeopathic Hospital 1903-1947: preparation for professional specialists or marginalised Cinderellas? Lorenzton M. Imperial College School of Medicine, London, UK. Int Hist Nurs J. 2000 Spring;5(2):20-7. This paper provides a summarised account of research in progress on Nurses’ Registers from the London Homeopathic Hospital, 1903-1947. The particular question addressed in this paper relates to nurses role in homeopathy at the hospital during the above period, as it emerges from the registers. Comparison with nursing at the hospital in the 1990s is provided by reference to a research report by Clara Harris, who conducted research on contemporary nurses’ role at the hospital. The role of nurses is seen in the context of the uneasy relationship between homeopathic and orthodox doctors. Research on the Nurses’ Registers forms part of a larger project concerning the history of the London Homeopathic Hospital from 1889 till 1947. The first phase of the research, conducted jointly by Bernard Leary (a homeopathic doctor) and Anna Bosanquet (a social scientist) and author (1993-95), and funded by the Wellcome Trust, related to analysis of 300 volumes of clinical patient notes (approximately 60,000 individual records) from the period 1889-1923, which were found in the hospital basement by the domestic services manager in 1992. Phase 2 of this research project is being undertaken by the author without funding and was commenced in 1996. Nurses’ Registers from the period 1903-1947 were analysed in detail, recording a wide range of information about student nurses at the hospital during this period. Data from the 1903-1947 registers will be compared with information collected by Clara Harris in a project funded by the old North East Thames Regional Health Authority in 1922. The role of nurses in the nineteenth century and at the present time will be seen in the context of medical homeopathic practice, and the relevant research by Nicholls is referred to briefly. It is important to stress that the discussion relates to homeopathic nursing, not to nurses who have left their nursing posts to become ‘lay’ homeopaths (the title used by homeopathic doctors for all non-medical homeopathic practitioners). In 2002, the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital was extensively refurbished at a cost of £18.5 million, and it is now part of the University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH). From 16.9.2010, the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital changed its name to the Royal London Hospital for Integrated Medicine (RLHIM) to better reflect the developing services now available at the hospital. Pierre Schmidt 1894 – 1987

Pierre Schmidt 1894 – 1987 was a Swiss orthodox physician who converted to homeopathy and who was responsible for reintroducing classical homepathy into Europe, and he was one of the main founders of the Liga Medicorum Homeopathic Internationalis (LIGA).

In 1950, Schmidt restored LM potencies to the World for the first time since 1840.

Schmidt set up his own Foundation, The Homeopathic Fondation Pierre Schmidt, devoted to restoring homeopathy to its original basis, and comprising his own library and an annual grant to further classical homeopathy. The Schmidt Nagel Homeopathic Laboratory in Geneva was set up in 1927 by Pierre Schmidt and his wife Doral Nagel.

Pierre Schmidt was a colleague of Richard Haehl, Antoine Nebel.

Pierre Schmidt was responsible for reintroducing classical homepathy into Europe. He was a co-founder of LIGA and active participant in the organization for many years.

Dr. Schmidt was introduced to the results of homeopathic treatment during the 1918 flu epidemic while living in London. There he met both John Henry Clarke and John Weir.

In 1922 he came to the United States and began his studies with Alonzo Austin and Frederica Gladwin, who had been a pupil of James Tyler Kent‘s. He became the first graduate of the American Foundation for Homoeopathy course for doctors.

Returning to his native eland he set up practice in Geneva, Switzerland. He was responsible for reintroducing classical homeopathy into Europe, teaching several generations of physicians, including Elizabeth Wright Hubbard.

Dr. Schmidt helped edit the “Final General Repertory” of James Tyler Kent, and translated the Organon into French. In 1925, he was one of the main founders of the Liga Medicorum Homeopathic Internationalis (LIGA), an international organization of classical homeopathic physicians.

In 1955 he spoke at the Hahnemann Monument in Washington, DC, on the 200th anniversary of Samuel Hahnemann‘s birth. His laboratory included the latest machine for the making of potencies and his library (3000 + volumes) was one of the rarest homeopathic collections in the world.

Dr Schmidt’s efforts highlighted the great changes advocated by Samuel Hahnemann in the 6th Edition of the Organon and brought these changes to the attention of the homeopathic community.

After a journey to the USA to the followers of James Tyler Kent, where Pierre Schmidt collected the doctrines, he returned to Switzerland. He taught a lot of students who were attracted by his growing reputation….

Pierre Schmidt was a physician and insisted on the necessity of medical knowledge, including not only classical medicine and the homeopathy but also elements of acupuncture, manual medicine, knowledge about semiology, proceeding from the morphopsychology to the iridology, in passing over the graphology, the chirology and the numerology.

He also had a wide linguistic knowledge which enabled him to take the part of a translator, at a time when a method for a simultaneous translation did not yet exist. This ability also facilitated his teaching abroad and helped, when Pierre Schmidt was asked to organize seminars.

Pierre Schmidt was very appreciative of art, literature, music, theatre, painting, and traditional tapestry work. His working rooms were a real museum. But Pierre Schmidt did not neglect physical exercise either. In the winter, he skied, in the summer he went on mountain tours, with Fritz, his mountain guide. Nothing in human nature surprised him.

In 1921, soon after his marriage, he founded a laboratory with the help of his wife. There, he prepared homeopathic medicaments following the traditional technique proceeding from the origins that he had brought home from his journeys to the USA….

Furthermore, Pierre Schmidt never stopped to teach privately many students from all over the world who came to see him for a traineeship or those he met on his journeys. Because of his travelling his was nicknamed “the Globetrotter of the homeopathy“.

The Foundation of the “Groupement hahnemannien de Lyon“, 1946 – 1978, was a culminating point of his teaching. The work of this group was collected and diffused in a monthly publication, the Cahiers du Groupement hahnemannien de Lyon, supplied by the classical practice, this journal is still published.

The result of Pierre Schmidt‘s abundant literary activity is a great number of publications in French, English, German, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese. The French speaking homeopathic world is obliged to him for the translation of the 6th edition of the Organon, of Samuel Hahnemann‘s Maladies Chroniques, of James Tyler Kent‘s Lectures and of James Compton Burnett‘s Cinquante raisons pour être homoeopathe.

In 1978, Pierre Schmidt stopped all his medical activities and lived with very good friends in Nancy. There, he died on the 15th of October 1987, aged 94 years. He left behind a great number of followers in Europe, Latin America and the subcontinent of India. They continue to pass on his work.

Pierre Schmidt was born on the 22nd of July 1894 in Neuchâtel. He was the oldest in a family of six children. From the age of 10 he wanted to be a doctor.

When he was 17, his family moved to Geneva, where he studied. He was a brilliant student. He completed his studies at the age of 26, finishing top out of 40 examinees. His father was successfully treated by a homeopath, Dr Ubert of Neuchâtel, who was determined that the 2 oldest children, Pierre and Roger, should become homeopaths. (Pierre Schmidt was also consulted Antoine Nebel).

He gave them Samuel Hahnemann’s Organon. Pierre Schidt was fascinated when he read this. He studied Latin, German, English and Sanskrit.

He had to treat a serious case of pharyngitis in a 10 year old child, which looked as though it could be diphtheria. He treated the child with mercurius cyanatus, administering 6 drops with a potency of 9CH every 2 hours. The child made a spectacular recovery.

This placed him in a dilemma. He had never seen a case of diphtheria whilst practising, and he noticed that homeopathic medicine gave him results that he did not obtain with traditional medicine.

He resolved to put homeopathy to the test, after hesitating over allopathy. Dr Schmidt re-read the Organon and Chronic Diseases from start to finish. He went to visit about twenty homeopaths in Switzerland, and Dr Mende of Zurich insisted on his going to study homeopathy in the USA, passing through London to meet John Henry Clarke, Margaret Lucy Tyler and John Weir, physician to the British royal family. He met society homeopaths in Paris, but they paid him no attention.

In 1927 he set out for the USA. It took him 14 days to cross the Atlantic. It was his intention to complete his doctoral thesis, which he entitled Laws and principles applied to current therapy by homeopathy. He went to the Flower Hospital, where he attended courses in homeopathy.

He was lucky enough to be welcomed by Dr Austin, private physician to John Davison Rockerfeller Senior, who took him on as a pupil. Over a period of several months, Dr Austin taught him James Tyler Kent’s philosophy, the Repertory and the Materia Medica. He taught him to work with high dilutions (XM). He sent him to do a course with Frederica Gladwin in Philadelphia, where he attended consultations for 3 months.

In her will, Frederica Gladwin left him a little book, the only copy in existence. Dr Austin left him his own copy of James Tyler Kent’s Repertory, and James Tyler Kent’s diamond ring. It is thanks to the generosity of these two American doctors that he returned to Switzerland with more than 1,000 different works, 4,000 high dilutions and a sound basis of knowledge.

As soon as he returned, Pierre Schmidt began to promote homeopathy in Europe. At the age of 28, he married Dora Nagel, a pharmacist. They had two daughters, Gilberte and Yolande, both of whom sadly died at the age of 2 of encephalitis, in spite of the care with which they were surrounded. It was a difficult ordeal, and he greatly valued certain doctors who surrounded him during those grim days. He was very grateful to Antoine Nebel, who came to try and cure them. However, nothing could save them.

His wife also worked in the field of homeopathy, and set up a homeopathic laboratory. From 1921 on, Pierre Schmidt practised homeopathy in Geneva. In 1931 he headed an international homeopaths’ congress in Geneva.

He was fascinated by ophthalmodiagnosis and acupuncture. Dr Schmidt ran a great many courses. In 1946 he set up a homeopathy school in Lyon. 40 doctors attended the courses. He gave conferences in London, Barcelona and Brussels. He also trained

Calcarea ostrearum, Calcarea arsenicosa, Cadmium sulphuratum.

CALCAREA OSTREARUM:

This remedy is never considered as an acute one, yet it has many interesting acute indications. CALCAREA is one of the great monuments of the Hahnemannian genius. His idea of preparing from insoluble substances with his process of trituration and dynamization, thus transforming completely inactive substances and developing a therapeutic power entirely unknown, constitutes one of the most splendid discoveries in medicine. Hahnemann experimented with it first on himself by dissolving oyster shells in vinegar, calling it: TERRA CALCAREA ACETICA. Later he abandoned this procedure and triturated the middle layer of the oyster shell representing pure CALCIUM CARBONATE, calling it CALCAREA OSTREARUM. Thus it is a living calcium produced by the animal with a much greater value than the ordinary lime carbonate.

Noticing the much more intense efficacy of dynamized insoluble substances (as compared with simply dissolved substances) then dissolved in water and alcohol, he abandoned the calcium acetate which had been proved on healthy humans. So the complete proving of calcarea is a MIXTURE OF THE SYMPTOMS OF CALCAREA ACETICA AND CALCAREA OSTREARUM.

Let us not forget that lime is a constituent of the body. It is part of our bones and teeth, but also a part of our muscles, nerves, blood, and other fluids of our body.

CALCAREA, with SULPHUR and LYCOPODIUM is one of the great triumvirate of Psora. It is Hahnemann's PSORA-SYCOTIC par excellence. Although indicated mostly in chronic disturbances, it has numerous indications in acute states, as in acute exacerbations of chronic diseases. They are listed below according to the Hahnemannian scheme:

First observe in these 3 remedies the required sequence: SULPHUR, CALCAREA, LYCOPODIUM. From long experience, one can say that 85% of patients are found in the big cycle of these 3 remedies; and always in this order, and sometimes along the line, a patient will need these 3 remedies. If you prescribe lycopodium AFTER sulfur, you run the risk of provoking a symptomatic imbroglio which will be very difficult to unravel later. So my advice to you is to follow the experience of the old masters and follow the prescribed order.

Everybody knows that Calcarea fits particularly both EXTREMES OF LIFE, mostly indicated in leuco-phlegmatic children, indolent, with a large head, a big tummy, a puffed and pale face, with a slow and imperfect bone development, with delayed closing of the fontanelles, delayed dentition, delayed growth and delayed walking. Strange enough, these children are not delayed in talking. (It is NATRUM MURIATICUM, who talks late.)

However it is also the remedy of girl growing too fast. It acts perfectly in many acute conditions where the constitutional characteristics are utterly absent. There is no need at all to be indolent and fat in order to need CALCAREA in an acute condition. At the beginning of life, the child is fed with milk containing lots of calcium needed for bone and teeth formation; yet at the end of life we get calcified, sclerosed, everything hardens and one becomes again a little lump of brittle calcium. . . .

If CALCAREA is the remedy of too fast growing girls, the remedy for boys who grow too fast is often PHOSPHORIC ACID.

MENTAL SYMPTOMS:

Mentally speaking, CALCAREA is a great worrier and very fearful. It is one of the most ANXIOUS remedy of the Materia Medica. It has practically all the types of anxiety and fears that are on the book and their sequellae as well. So it is first a great remedy for ailments FOLLOWING BAD NEWS, whether heard by telephone, wire, letter or directly: the police coming and telling you your wife had an automobile accident, or notice by telephone that some dear one passed away. In such cases, give the XM of CALCAREA at once in case GELSEMIUM, which is a vegetable drug, and which should be your first choice, fails usually give GELSEMIUM first, as CALCAREA is rather the remedy corresponding to recurring situations.

Did I tell you the case of a janitor of the Geneva Conservatory who was taking a stroll every morning with a friend, for years, regularly, and one day his friend failed to come; so he phoned and was told that his friend was dead. Our janitor then suddenly felt a terrible noise in his right ear, and so became deaf in that ear ever since. He went to see his doctor first, without relief he then consulted three different specialists who could find nothing in his ear, yet prescribed tranquilizer of various kinds which did nothing to improve his ear, yet they produced dyspesia, constipation and insomnia as iatrogenic symptoms. . . . Several months later, his brother who is professor at the Conservatory told me about his case, and asked if anything could bo done for this unfortunate man. I simply administered GELSEMIUM XM, one dose: ten minutes later the noise stopped and has not returned. I could have given CALCAREA, but when we hesitate between remedies, one of which is a vegetable the other a mineral, it is always better to start with the vegetable, keeping the mineral in reserve as acting deeper. Vegetables live from minerals and not vice-versa. Minerals act deeper than either vegetable or animal remedies. When in the study of a case you find mostly vegetable remedies, you can be sure that the case is never as serious as if minerals were rather indicated. Animal remedies, like minerals, are a bad sign. Of course, we know that mineral remedies have acute phases, for example a chronic type of Phosphorus might need Phosphorus in an acute condition, but then you better go no higher than the 200th potency. Likewise with vegetable remedies. Pulsatilla for example you deal with both acute and chronic situations. The safe rule is, in an acute case, to prefer a vegetable remedy and keep the mineral remedy in reserve, as William Tell did his second arrow. Although produced by an animal, CALCAREA OSTREARUM is a mineral substance nevertheless.

CALCAREA IS ANXIOUS. He is afraid to go to bed. You will be called to see children having this fear. It isn't the fear of the night nor that of obscurity. You also find: fear at night; fear to go to sleep; fear of death; of insanity, of possible mishap, OF THE FUTURE; of getting poor, of suffering; of going to the dentist and naturally of operations; for his health; thinks he is getting sick for his soul's salvation. It is the remedy for the type of children who are afraid to go to bed because they see all kinds of grimaces and strange figures on falling asleep. They can't bear to go to the movies or look at a scene of crime, cruelty, battle, a western. I have seen a 10 year old boy who could not sleep since he saw a western at the movies, and CALCAREA improved him almost at once. As I have often repeated, when a patient has more than three kinds of fears, think of CALCAREA.

Calcarea is particularly fearful DURING FEVER and DURING CHILLS. That is the child who wakes up between 2-3 a.m. Howling and cannot be quieted down. He has forgotten everything in the morning. So it is really one of the best remedies for nocturnal fears to remember. The aura of Calcarea fear is generally in the epigastric region. It is also for sad children and who think that they are unhappy. Calcarea is sad during FEVER mostly, before menses, and during SWEATS.

It is the King pin for children's diseases during dentition. After prescribing Chamomilla for troubles during dentition without success, or after it fails to act, then try Calcarea. It works beautifully for children filching money. Women are very agitated and nervous during menses. Calcarea cries at the least remark or scolding or reproach, and is no better from consolation. Weeping often alternates with laughter. Calcarea weeps DURING TRANSPIRATION and mostly during chills.

Children are very unstable during dentition, and startle from noise. The Calcarea child can bite, spit in people's face, or howl day and night. The other day, I was travelling by air between London and Bruxelles and could hardly contain myself: there was a Scandinavian mother holding a pretty baby in her arms but it never ceased howling during the whole trip. I would have abstained giving Chamomilla, because the mother was holding the baby in her arms, coddling it without getting anywhere. Maybe Cina was indicated or perhaps Calcarea. . . . Later on, it will be irritable during headaches and, in women before or during menses, but mostly during SWEATS and DURING CHILLS. It is a wonderful remedy for ailments following EMOTIONAL CONFLICTS. The imagination is exhalted at night, and in certain states like grippe, fever, etc., desires to go home though being at home. (However Bryonia is more typical For this symptom.)

GENERAL SYMPTOMS:

It is the classical remedy for any trouble developing during DENTITION, and the remedy for babies, par excellence. It is indicated for LOSS OF VITAL FLUIDS: Hemorrages; diarrheas, sweats, seminal emissions. It is useful for THOSE WHO CANNOT FAST and have ailments from lack of nutrition. The sun aggravates, producing headaches and sunstrokes. Remember that Calcarea has both lateralities. However, it acts mostly on the right side for the head, the eye, the face, the abdomen, the male genitalia, and the upper extremities; But on the left side for the neck, the chest and the lower limbs.

In the Repertory, Calcarea is indicated for the left testicle ectopy in small print at "Retractation" p.709. These ectopies are difficult to treat and one is thinking of Calcarea because it works well in congenital disturbances. Surgical operations often modifies the psyche of these children in an extraordinary way. Up to now, I have been lucky with a few remedies such as Calcarea, Tuberculinum, sometimes Psorinum or Syphilinum. But Calcarea comes first in such cases.

Remember that it is a remedy in the 3d degree for sprains, muscle strain after lifting heavy material; it has an elective action on sinews and ligaments (Ruta). Generally one thinks of Rhus Tox. For such things, but you well know that Calcarea is the chronic of Rhus, and it works well even in acute cases.

Calcarea can faint during severe headaches or after stool, or during menses, or in the street. The patient states that his illness starts from the stomach and rises into the throat.

You might be called to prescribe for an epileptic; think of Calcarea for convulsion epileptic and epileptoid. Epilepsy is a mysterious disease of unknown origin; be generous and when talking to the parents speak of "epitoid" state, not epilepsy. Epitoid is a very general term covering epilepsy. Also during OB deliveries, do not speak of "pains" but of contractions, and your lady will be quieted knowing she will get contractions and not pain during delivery of their child.

If epilepsy fits or convulsions occur or are worse during the full moon think of Calcarea. The aura starts from the solar plexus, as for the fears or the fainting spells, or he feels that a mouse is climbing up a limb before a convulsion. I had such a case which responded beautifully with Calcarea. The causes of convulsions vary a great deal and can be from fears, from vexation or mortification, in children during dentition, or from suppressed eruptions, i.e. So called "cured" by an ointment or other outer applications; Finally after masturbation.

These convulsions can be either tonic or clonic. Most of the time there is loss of consciousness. It is a great remedy for CHOREA, most often for hemi-chorea from fears, from worms or in onanism. It is specific for convulsions in Addison's disease. They occur mostly evening, but also night or morning, at 4 a.m. And last until 4 p.m.

Vertigo:

Acute vertigo. The homeopathic remedy will seldom fail to stop vertigo. The Calcarea vertigo is latero-pulsive, sometimes retro-pulsive. Worse turning the head, looking up, but mostly looking down a staircase or through a window. It is the best remedy for MOUNTAIN SICKNESS, with the Lily Of The Valley, Convallaria Maialis. Mountain sickness is to be found in the Repertory in Generalities: Ascending High Places, p.1345. What are the symptoms of mountain sickness (from 3500 feet up): precordial anxiety, dyspnea from exertion, nausea, intense fatigue, prostration cutting the legs, headaches, vertigo, cyanosis, epistaxis, blurred vision. All these symptoms lead to the following remedies: Arsenicum, Aurum, Belladonna, Calcarea, Carbo-veg; Causti-cum, Conium, Cuprum, Gelsemium, Lachesis, Lycopodium, Natrum mur; and Pulsatilla.

But the main remedies are LACHESIS and CALCAREA, next ARSENICUM. For cardiac symptoms, think of Convallaria, and for the prostration Oleander and Spigelia.

Vertigo ascending stairs rapidly. So much for the picture of Calcarea Ostrearum for you to remember.

Head:

Warm head during menses. Yet, Calcarea is notoriously characterized by everything COLD; it has icy INTERNAL feelings or external on head, mostly on the right side. Very useful in students' headaches, often with midriasis (school girls).

Headaches from sun stroke. Profuse sweat localized exclusively to the scalp, especially in children with late hardening of the fontanelles, leaving a large greasy spot on the pillow.

Eyes:

Calcarea is often indicated in TRAUMATIC OPHTALMIAS; in new-born CONJUNCTIVITIS. Infantile kerato-conjunctivitis with marked photophobia; morning agglutinated eyes and lachrymation, outside. Corneal ulcers. Children complain of having horrible visions at night when closing the eyes. They are afraid to go to bed because as soon as they close their eyes, they see hideous, frightful figures. Be careful never to tell tragic or terrible stories to the Calcarea type children, or to let them see violent movies because of their extreme sensitivity that makes them dream for several nights and they get night terrors for a long time.

Ears:

Indicated for those catching cold in their ears when the neck is exposed. Acute external otitis, but mostly INTERNAL. Pussy otitis, particularly when the drum is ulcerated.

Nose:

Sniffles, worse morning. Colds at each change of the weather. Colds with Frequent sneezes. Coryza with cough, dry nose, obstructed nose, violent attacks; epistaxis.

It is one of the remedies in the 3d degree for EUSTACHIAN TUBE CATARRH. Sneezing without coryza. For the sneezing morning on waking, think of Ammonium Carbonicum.

Face:

Crusta lactea. In the very beginning of my practice, I converted a colleague who went to all his classes with me, by curing one of his patients, a six months old child covered with crusta lactea over the entire body. I had prescribed SULPHUR XM which aggravated frightfully with enormous cervical glands. This ganglion association in a child having a rather big head and late fontanelles, indicated Calcarea XM, one dose, which, in 3 days improved all the symptoms. The glands faded away, the itching disappeared, and gradually the eruption cleared.

PAROTIDITIS: Calcarea fits all kinds of swellings. PAROTIDITIS DURING SCARLET FEVER: Calcarea is a specific. ADENITIS, mostly the acute submaxillary. PROSOPALGIA better from warm applications.

Mouth:

Calcarea sleeps with an open mouth. When, entering the room, if you see a child sleeping with an open mouth, think of Calcarea. Then putting your hand in front of it, you find a very warm breath: it is Calcarea. Chewing motions, and swallowing during sleep. Such things should be mentioned by the parents. Hahnemann described it. In order to find the remedy, we need the symptoms observed by the physician, by the patient and by the bystanders. It is a great remedy for EPULIS, this little tumor of the gum betwixt and between benignancy and malignancy. Before advising surgery, try Calcarea which quite often might take it away.

Teeth:

Odontalgias due mainly to cold wind exposure. The pains are always worse from cold air and cold food. Odontalgia during pregnancy. In such case you'll help both mother and child. Any disturbances during dentition.

Throat:

Aphthous angina.

Stomach:

Calcarea has strange and very marked DESIRES: for SALT, SWEETS (pastry, chocolate, etc.), SUGAR, ACIDS, WINE and EGGS, particularly SOFT BOILED, mostly when sick or convalescent. He is very fond of things STRANGE, INDIGESTIBLE and DIRTY; paper, pencils which he often chews, coal, flour and raw potatoes. (This desire for indigestible, unassimilable materials is called PICA.)

HE HATES COFFEE, MEAT, TOBACCO AND MILK. Peas, cabbage, saurkraut, milk and veal, give him indigestion. Warm food, warm milk and dry foods are very poorly tolerated.

Acid vomitings, worse DURING DENTITION. Diarrhea and vomiting during dentition. Vomiting worse AT NIGHT; the child vomits curdled milk after sucking the breast or bottle.

Abdomen:

Diarrhea worse during dentition; infantile, acid, watery. Hepato-biliary colics with profuse perspirations, has to double-up. Sensation of COLD IN THE ABDOMEN. Helminthiasis, tenia, ascarides. Anal abcess. Redness with peri-anal irritation in babies (even after correction of the diet).

Certain adults mention a GENERAL AMELIORATION of all symptoms WHEN CONSTIPATED. This is a rather rare and peculiar symptom which i have noticed occasionally; when regular stools recur, everything goes wrong. There are only three remedies expressing this symptom: CALCAREA, Mercurius and PSORINUM. Acute entero-colitis of children; infantile hernias, umbilical and inguinal.

OOZING OMPHALITIS. You meet rheumatic patients complaining that their umbilicus smells horribly. You find usually a deep umbilicus with a kind of intertrigo and very fetid suppuration. Careful local disinfection usually clears it up, but if the application of a Calendula ointment is not effective, think of Calcarea. Often such patients are acidified from eating too much sweets. Insist that they curb this habit.

Very light stools, MASTIC, WHITE, LIENTHERIC (ergo pancreatic insufficiency, and remember that Calcarea has a definite action on the pancreas). Enormous stools not only in children, but also in adults. Semi-liquid, hard and formed then fluid stools. Acid stools. Rectal prolapse worse during stool.

Urinary tract:

Nephretic colics with hematuria. Did I tell you about the patient I saw-in india, who received several doses of Belladonna 200 without much success. Against my advice, he got some morphine to be injected. My master who happened to be beside me said: "Say, why don't you give him Calcarea? Since calculi are usually made of calcium?" and so in a few hours, with Calcarea 200, the pains receded. . . Therefore Calcarea works also as an acute remedy in renal colics, often even spectacularly. Have no fear to repeat the dose even at the 10 M.

Male genitals:

HYDROCELE of the new-born, also in adults, particularly after a suppressed eruption. New-borns are apt to have a hydrocele which, normally will disappear in a few days. In adults, if a rash has been suppressed by an ointment followed by an hydrocele, consider CALCAREA as an important remedy.

Phimosis. I must say that I wouldn't think of giving Calcarea for a phimosis. Suffice it to take forceps and dilate the prepuce; I can't understand why gynecologists or pediatricians are neglecting the care of the gentitals of infants. Seems to me that is the first thing to do. When I see a new-born, I first ascertain whether he has 5 fingers, check the umbilicus, the ears, the eyes, and then the genitals. It often happens that you have to free the clitoris in little girls; or in boys the prepuce from adhesions. It might bleed a little, but use some Calendula ointment and you will have no trouble. I saw the other day a 14-year-old boy with preputial adhesions, very difficult to break and very painful; requiring even surgery.

Did I tell you the story of the parents who brought me their 4 month old son with a phimosis. I dilated and retracted it, all very well and told them to bring him back a week later. They did, I dilated again but not easily. The third time, the father said: "Doctor, it's rather inconvenient for me to bring the boy so often for such a little thing. Why not show me how to do it?" "With pleasure, I replied..." A week later, at 4 p.m., that was the day my chauffeur had his day off, and my car was being serviced, I was asked to come and see that child immediately. I ran out, stopped a car in the street and was conveyed graciously to my destination. Arriving at the foot of the stairs, I heard wild shrieks, at each story all doors open, the doorman all , excited. Landing on the 4th floor, I see blood all over the kitchen, the child convulsed on a cushion with bloody drapes all around, and the father battling with the child, the mother-in-law shouting: "Disgusting, he is a bandit..." All around people were screaming: Villain, Brute... what a commotion! Examining the child, I saw a paraphimosis completely strangling the glands, now enormously swollen and red. Papa had used vaseline which made it so slippery that it was impossible to retract the prepuce. At each try, blood was squiriting; the baby screaming, papa in a foul temper, mother-in-law crying... a horrible scene. I suggested a bath followed by a careful wiping of the ointment. Then griping at the very base of the penis I brought very gently the skin back up and suddenly everything snapped in place. I then told the father: "Listen, Sir, you are an electrician, so take care of such things; when you have medical problems, let your doctor attend to it." I checked the child twice after and everything got fine. No operation was needed.

Calcarea has genital and scrotal sweats. Vesicles on the penis or prepuce; herpes genitals. Inflammation of the frenulum, glands or prepuce. Frequent nocturnal pollutions. What do you call frequent pollutions? Once weekly is not abnormal; but if it occurs every night, think of Calcarea.

FEMALE GENITALS:

The least emotion or upset brings back the menses. Menopausal metrorrhagia, with leucorrhea, mostly after emotional upsets. Abortion threats in women with heavy menses. Scanty menses, lasting only one day is an important indication for not using Calcarea.

PUERPERAL FEVER with vaginal pains or head perspiration and stitching pains in the uterus. Too early, too copious and too long menses. It is the RULE OF THE THREE P's: PREMATURE, PROFUSE, PROLONGED and points to Calcarea.

The baby is a sort of "tumor" needing Calcium. Remember that Calcarea is a most important remedy for PREGNANCY. Vomitings at the onset, even more indicated when you find toothache at the same time. False pains rising from the pelvis to the stomach. Odontalgia during pregnancy. Cramps in the soles, also toes during pregnancy.

LARYNX:

Painless hoarseness, worse in the morning. Laryngitis. Aphonia.

THORAX:

Loose cough in the morning, dry at night. COUGH WHEN PLAYING THE PIANO. Irritating, persistant cough, particularly in apartment painted green (paints with arsenical basis. CLARKE).

Cough on entering a warm room. Whooping cough worse a.m., in children, during dentition. Itchy cough as with a feather in the throat. Cough with coryza. Hemoptysis during cough, mostly diurnal. Thoracic pains by touch, by percussion or pressure on the thorax.

BREASTS:

Calcarea has a special affinity for the breasts; LARGE breasts. Mammary hypertrophy. Swollen, warm breasts with little milk. Painful breasts during menses. AGALACTIA with big breasts. GALACTORREA too copious and bad milk which is refused by the baby. If accompanied with neurasthenia, give CHINA 10 M. If the baby sucks and does not grow, give Calcarea 10M, one dose, to the mother. The milk is too thin, watery, bluish, tasting bad, nauseating. The baby refuse to suck and cries much.

BACK:

Back pains after efforts: lifting, carrying, pushing heavy objects (GRAPH., LYC., RHUS TOX.). Cutting pains under the right scapula radiating to the epigastrium. LUMBAGO, can hardly get up in the morning.

UPPER EXTREMITIES:

CRAMPS in the hands, arms, during the night. Wrist sprain.

LOWER EXTREMITIES:

CRAMPS, in the popliteal space, legs, CALVES, mostly in bed at night, around 3 a.m., when stretching; of the feet, soles and toes especially during pregnancy.

All cramps and spasms depend on the kidneys. Eclampsia, you know the relationship of the kidneys on convulsions; therefore see to it that the patient urinates sufficiently. In May and June, suggest the famous cherry-soup. Providence always give you the necessary fruit at the right time. You prescribe 2 handfuls of fresh cherries in one litre of water, boil them for 10 minutes. Cherry stems are good diuretics; the kernel contains prussic acid acting on cardiac contraction, and the pulp acts on the intestine. Drink a glass every 2-3 hours of this cherry soup. Very effective for arthritic hepatic and renal cases. Sulfur has similar cramps.

Calcarea has sprains of the hands and wrists, and ankles. PHLEBITIS; phlegmasia alba dolens, better elevating the legs, worse going down. Cold knees. Cold feet. Clammy hands and feet. One thinks of SILICA for bad smelling feet when undressing. But Calcarea has bad smelling feet, with socks eroded by very acid sweats.

Sleep:

The Calcarea patient chews and swallows during sleep. Terrifying visions when closing eyes and falling asleep.

Fever:

FEVER with CHILLS and CHILLINESS. Too hot externally, yet chilly. Typhoid fevei. Chills at 2 p.m., FROM THE EPIGASTRIUM. Fever during menses. Summer fever.

Perspiration:

Many symptoms are aggravated by sweats (as Mercurius). Calcarea cries and becomes irritable when sweating. It is the main remedy for LOCAL sweats, mostly the anterior and superior parts of the body. Perspiration mostly of the head, the neck, the chest, the axillae, the hands, the knees, the feet and male sexual organs.

******************************************************************************

CADMIUM SULPHURATUM:

We use four combinations of the metal CADMIUM:

1. Cadmium bromatum

2. Iodatum

3. Chloratum or muriaticum

4. Sulfuratum. This one is particularly useful in the homeopathic kit for acute manifestations.

Do not confuse Cadmium Sulfuratum Cd-S, with Cadmium Sulfuricum Cd-S04, which is the sulfate, which is a good homeo-psoric its primary action affects mostly the STOMACH, and its closest analogue is Zincum which acts primarily on the brain. Cadmium is found in nature as a metal always associated with ZINCUM, with similar action but stronger than Zinc. It is classified between BRYONIA and ARSENICUM. Like BRYONIA, it has the desire to be quiet, looking for peace, ease, but it has also the exhaustion, the irritable weakness of ARSENICUM.

Following the Hahnemannian scheme, we note that it is a CHILLY remedy, chilly even close to the fire. Works particularly well for alcoholics, for the sequellae of drafts suppressing sweats. Worse in cold air, but also worse in the sun.

Good remedy for BLENNORRAGIC OCULAR DISEASES. Deep rings under the eyes. Mydriasis. Often anisocoria. FACIAL PARALYSIS, mostly left sided after exposure to the North wind, cold wind, to the face. Its main sphere of action is gastro-intestinal. It has intense nausea even so-called fatal nausea which should be written in the 3d degree in Kent's Repertory, p.506. The black vomit of typhus amaril, i.e. Coffee ground hematemesis characteristic of yellow fever. That's why it is so useful in the advanced phase of cancer of the stomach with extreme prostration, fatal vomiting and nausea and all the symptoms of an impending death. You can bring considerable help in such cases and stop this vomiting when all other remedies fail. It has also intense burning and stomach clamps, cutting plains, craving for cold drinks which are vomited as soon as absorbed. CADMIUM is indicated after food intoxication better from eating; gastralgia with terrible and incessant efforts to vomit, bringing up a sticky mucus. It works very well in alvine evacuations and CHOLERA MORBUS.

Heart palpitations with thoracic constriction. Wakes up suffocating, dares not fall asleep again; suffocation when falling asleep. Prolonged insomnia.

Zymotic and septic fevers with nausea and vomiting. Chills and algidity even close to a fire. Trembling maxillary. Strong pruritus without particular localization, worse at night and in bed, worse touching, better from scratching, which causes a voluptuous sensation. Remedy for ailments following anxiety, grief, strong emotions, or exposure to cold wind - as, for example, in facial paralysis. It is aggravated by the sun, morning on waking, walking, going up stairs, and swallowing.

CALCAREA ARSENICOSA:

Also called Calcium Arsenicosum. Formula: Ca3(As 03)2. Not to be confused with Calcarea Arsenicica which is the Arsenite of Calcium - Ca3 As 04. Arsenici albi subtilissime pulverate, is a white powder insoluble in water, a combination of Arsenic Acid with Lime. It is dangerous and toxic up to the 3d centesimal; it is used from the 4th Centesimal Hahnemannian.

Generally it fits the LYMPHATIC subjects, SCROFULOUS and TUBERCULOUS. It acts particularly well in subjects who have been intoxicated with quinine it has three main indications:

* Epilepsy

* Albuminuria

* Cancer

For the Epileptics: EPILEPSY RELATED TO CARDIOPATHIES:

Before the attack:

* Vasomotor symptoms: Congestive flushes to face and head.

* Aphonia: patient looses his voice before the attack.

* Pain in the left hand. Constrictive pain in the heart.

* Urge to defecate before the attack.

The aura of this remedy starts either from the HEART REGION with flushes to the head, or from the LEFT ARM.

Never forget to consider, in epileptics, the remedy FOR THE ATTACK, and the remedy for the general state to be given BETWEEN THE ATTACKS.

For the Albuminurics: Albuminuria in the nephretics, during pregnancy, in alcoholics, in all cardiopathies, in sequellae of scarlet fever and measles. Edematous face, mostly around the eyes, edema of the lower extremities, edema of the back of the hands. Chills creeping up the back, mostly nightly.

Albuminuria with GREAT SENSITIVITY OF THE KIDNEY REGION FROM PRESSURE. Pollakiuria. Even: hematuria and oliguria. Pulse rapid and compressible, going up to 120. Dropsy.

TROPHO - NEUROTIC REMEDY FOR CANCEROUS PATIENTS:

a) For the burning pains of cancer of the pancreas,

b) For the burning pains of cancer of the uterus;

c) For adenocarcinomas and malignant tumors of the mesentery.

These are the general indications of this remedy. Now let us consider other symptoms which could be useful:

GREAT MORAL DEPRESSION.

VERTIGO with sensation of gliding on air, as if the feet were not touching the ground when walking. Hot head. Face is pale with deep blue circles. Patient looks pale and suffering. Tongue and lips dry; great thirst; good remedy for gastric ulcer. Inguinal adenopathy, with tearing pains in the leg. Hypomenorrhea. Fear, with a sensation of oppression, of suffocating with palpitations. Tumultuous PALPITATIONS with pain in the heart from physical or mental exertion, from the least emotion. Rapid and depressed pulse. Regular extrasystoles every 4 beats. Sepsis with embolic focus, myocarditis. Tired painful back between shoulders and on sacral area, cannot rise. Vasomotor disturbances in obese females at the menopause. According to Majumbar, it is a very efficient remedy for liver and spleen hypertrophy in children. Infantile spleno- and hepatomegaly.

REMEDIES FOR THE EMERGENCY KIT

* Epilepsy

* Albuminuria

* Cancer
